Understanding ERO reviews

ERO’s school reports
ERO’s school reports are published on ERO’s website following a school review.
ERO school reports provide an independent, evidence-based view of how a school is supporting student achievement, progress and attendance. They identify what is working well, where improvement is needed, and what actions will support better outcomes for students.
ERO updated its school reports in 2026. Some reports on our website will be in the older format.
You can search for a school’s report here.
Our school reports
ERO school reports provide an independent, evidence-based view of how a school is supporting student achievement, progress and attendance. They identify what is working well, where improvement is needed, and what actions will support better outcomes for students.
School reports have three parts:
A visual snapshot
An overview table of all of the judgements
A full report with more detail.
The report provides information that is useful for parents and caregivers, including:
student achievement, progress, attendance and assessment
the quality of teaching and learning
the school’s key strengths
where improvement is needed
the actions school leaders and boards need to take to improve outcomes for students
the school board’s attestation that it is meeting legislative and regulatory requirements
hostel provision or international student provision, where these apply.
For schools with rumaki or reo rua, the report also includes information about the quality of teaching and learning through te reo Māori.

What happens if ERO has concerns about a school
ERO may identify a school as a school of concern when review evidence shows significant issues affecting outcomes for students or the school’s ability to make the improvements required.
When ERO identifies serious concerns, it increases monitoring and notifies the Ministry of Education so that appropriate support can be considered. This may include progress visits, further evidence gathering, and discussions with school leaders and the board about the actions required to improve student achievement, progress and attendance. In more serious cases, ERO may recommend that the Ministry consider statutory intervention to ensure the required improvements are made.
ERO will regularly review the progress the school is making to address the concerns identified. This includes checking whether the school is taking the required actions, whether those actions are making enough difference, and whether outcomes for students are improving. ERO will report on progress as part of this ongoing review and monitoring process.
Information about older style ERO reports
Our reports changed in early 2026. Older style ERO reports look different and use some specific language. This guide is designed to help parents and caregivers to better understand our older-style school reports and navigate the key findings: A guide to ERO’s school reports: for reports published before April 2026 (PDF, 413.07 KB)
